Securing your wireless network

Can work from home with a wireless local area network (WLAN), the theft of sensitive information and hacker or virus infiltration result if effective action is taken.

Because WLANs information over radio waves to send someone who could be with a person in your area pick up the transmission, so access to your computer. They could load viruses on your computer, which could be transferred to another computer on your network.

Up to 75 percent of WLANUsers have installed a basic security features, while 20 percent left completely open with the default configurations are.

It is recommended that wireless router / access point setup be always done though a wired client.

You can setup security through the following steps:

Change the default admin password on wireless router / access point to a secured password.

Change your WEP keys periodically.

Change the channel your routerused for sending and receiving data on a regular basis.

Use encryption such as WEP and WPA. Where equipment is not supported, at least 128-bit WEP encryption, you should.

Change the default SSID of your router / access point to a hard to guess name. Setup your computer device to connect to this SSID by default.

Setup router / access point not to broadcast the SSID. The same SSID must be setup on the client side manually. This function is not availableon all devices.

On any computer with a wireless card should be configured the network connection properties, to allow connection to Access Point Networks Only too.

Detailed information can be found on my Free PC Security blog.

Taking Advantage of Public WLAN Hotspots

If you are a sales representative to get away from your home town, you may not have an easily accessible place an Internet connection for your laptop allows access to the Internet world, your e-mail, check to see reports on the work Excel spreadsheets and send a Power Point presentation. This is where WiFi hotspots' to come into our picture of what we touch before. These are wireless networks that can be very handy.

Many cities have jumped on the moving train the provisionWiFi throughout the downtown core. Companies flexibility people of this option provides a boost to the local economy.

It is a cost for the municipality to do so, of course. You need a provider to set up and maintain the network. To take into account the physical structure of the network to cover the size and structure of the city, tree, landscape and other factors. I read a recent article, which are the problems with some major cities with Wi-Fi zones addressed. ChicagoLA gave up, because it is too expensive, resulting from advertising revenue projections too high.

Of course you can always call the overpriced cafeteria, where demand for a regular coffee brings a blank stare.

Before you go merrily to the next castle, you need to know whether your hardware will support WiFi. A wireless network uses radio waves such as mobile phones, televisions and radios do. In fact, the communication over a wireless network is very similarTwo-way radio communications.

Here's what happens:
1. A computer's wireless adapter transmits data to a radio signal and sends it via an antenna.

2. A wireless router receives the signal and decodes it. It sends the information to the Internet with a physical, wired Ethernet connection.

The process also works in reverse, with the router receiving information from the Internet, and converts them into a radio signal and sending it tothe computer's wireless adapter. As long as they all have wireless adapters can use several devices a router to connect to the Internet. This connection is convenient and virtually invisible, and it's pretty reliable. If the router fails or if too many people try to use high-bandwidth applications at the same time, however, users can experience interference or lose their connections.

If you want to take advantage of public WiFi hotspots, the first thingJust make sure that your computer has the right wireless equipment. The majority of new laptops and many new desktop computers come with built-in wireless transmitter. If your laptop does not, you can use a wireless adapter that plugs into the PC Card slot or USB port. Desktop computers may have USB adapter, or you can buy an adapter that plugs into the PCI slot inside the computer. Many of these adapters can be more than one 802.11 standard.

Once youInstalled your wireless adapter and the drivers who can use it, should see your computer is able to automatically existing networks. This means that when you turn on your computer via a WiFi hotspot, the computer tell you that the network exists and ask if you want to connect. If you have an older computer, you might have to use a software program to detect and connect to a wireless network.

The question could as the question of why not with aWeb-enabled PDA device. You are responsible for most e-mail to wonderful, but they are problematic when it comes to opening attachments or comes to work with long reports. The screen is so small, you can only get a headache from squinting at it for too long. And your typing skills can be drastically reduced, so that your messages can be almost incomprehensible. So for the "heavy duty" stuff a laptop, WiFi is not only convenient but a necessity.

Fast, Affordable, Wireless Internet - easier than you think

I do not know how I ever been without broadband Internet service. The amount of information that I have access to is unbelievable. Anytime, anywhere in my house, at the click of a button. I'm talking about how to download free good quality video productions about science and nature, and some other groups with the right mouse button on my computer. Free audio podcasts and music on my computer. I surf the internet on my laptop from any room in my house. I recommend this freedom for everyone! So, as you can get broadbandand even wireless Internet connections in your house? It's easy, and you have to spend a fortune.

AOL has its advantages, but one thing is certain, it has not SPEED. All the promises faster service, AOL is only the caching of frequently accessed pages, which means easy loading times a page has AOL saves for the next visit. This will be faster loading of regular graphs and information, but also new data and new ads are still just as long, and it isnot increase the download speed of video and audio content.

I lived with AOL for a few years and finally figured out how I was able to surf faster for less money. I think AOL's basic rate is still about $ 20 or $ 25 per month. My broadband service through Verizon, costs about $ 17 or $ 18 per month (after taxes and fees USF, read) and is 10 times faster. I have it in time. In my area, using existing phone lines, I can 6 or 7 MB download (ie 6 or 7,000,000 bytes) in about one minute. That is, it takes me about 5-7 minutes to a 5 or 6-minute video production, or download it for 2-3 minutes for one hour only audio podcast.

Why am I telling you all this? I hate seeing people spend too much money on the internet services that do not have the speed and quality that is available elsewhere offer. AOL may continue to show that higher costs because AOL customers are prepared to pay, primarily because they do not understand how it all works, and that's something else available, fasterand cheaper. AOL is comfortable and has a lot of great features, all beautifully presented in a simple interface. This is what you pay for. But if you know where to go online (for example ... GOOGLE.com) to all information and news you need to find a simple search. Have not you heard? Google rules!

Anyway, back to what I can not speak, wireless high-speed internet for your computer. My wife and I decided to Verizon DSL upgrade for 14,99 $ per month (with a Year deal, big deal), plus taxes and an additional fee (Universal Service Fund, a federal program that subsidizes rural phone and Internet to provide access to schools and libraries.), Which brings it up to about $ 17 or $ 18 . After weighing the options and benefits, we thought it was worth it, and it was. Check in your area, I'm sure you can find a DSL service that offers a similar plan, or check Verizon.

To put it a step further, I installed a wireless> Router with ports for my old, Ethernet linked computer. Now my wife and I have networked 4 computers in our own home and can take our laptops anywhere in the house, even outside in the backyard, and surf the Internet 10 times faster than we previously. Actually, more than 10 times faster.

Average download speed with our AOL service was about 4) to 5 KB per second (for 4 or 5 thousand bytes ber second. Even if they advertised higher, the exchange rate, homeowners were getting was probably toomuch less by the quality of telephone lines in their homes and in the city. Sometimes when the wind is strong enough, we had reserved a delay in our relationship with AOL. I'm not kidding.

Now, for less than what our cost of AOL, we are download speeds anywhere from 70,000 bytes to 90,000 bytes per second. That is about twenty times faster than before! The number of Verizon DSL for our plan is announced 768kbps. Please note the small b, that is the Bits. That means 768,000 bits per second, which is(768 ÷ 8) 96,000 bytes per second. Of course, as dialup, DSL uses our phone lines, so that rate varies, but it is always much faster than dial-up.

Am sure, that we have upgraded to cable broadband connections could, but we could upgrade our cable service (I explain in a minute) and pay about $ 40 per month addition, for cable Internet speeds.

Yes, high-speed cable Internet dwarf our DLS speeds, but I ask you, microwave cooking is fast enough? I hearActions at work, waiting until 2 minutes to heat up their food, too. Give me a break! Sure, faster is better, but at what price? Patience is relative.

I mentioned upgrading our cable TV service. My wife and I do not see too much TV, and we do not need the premium channels. We learned that "antenna service" you can visit our local cable company for about $ 12 per month. They do not advertise that they too loud? Of course not, they want as many people as possible to $ 50 pay-per --Month for other cable programming. I think it may even be more than that in some areas.

In order for us to get cable modem, we would first have to upgrade to full cable for $ 50 or so, then pay an additional $ 30 or so on that for a cable modem. Let's see, now we pay $ 12 plus, say, $ 18 for our TV and Internet services, which is about $ 30 we spend every month for internet and TV. We have high speed Internet, and no extra channels, we will never see. Cable service costs U.S. $ 80 to $ 90!I can't justify that expense.

Sure, when I visit my friend and connect to his wireless network with my laptop I can download stuff in the blink of an eye, maybe 10 mb (10,000,000) in the same amount of time it takes me to download 1 mb, and I get jealous. But we just can't afford that right now, that's why I'm sharing this with you.

If you would like to increase the speed at which you can access new information, new technology, videos, music and movies (yeah, I download Sometimes movies - Click on Download and go away for a few hours, but I'm talking about a movie in full length), but do not want to spend too much money, I'm here to tell you that it is possible.

When you are ready to save money, faster Internet speeds and load some dormant brain cells to the new technologies and online services used, then one can separate from over-priced dial-up service and switch to broadband. It can be done.

Oh, and if you want to save money look at the TV toThis ... Check with your local cable provider via antenna, pay under $ 20 per month for basic TV channels (clean image) and iTunes (for free) because you get a lot of TV shows for download - a growing collection of a number Networks - - for only $ 3 each. To tell you the truth, I'd rather pay $ 3 for a TV episode I want to see than to pay $ 40 per month shows, I will never see.

And the future is now here! Consider Apple Computer, Inc., the wonderful company with a huge Influence on the company, and creator of iTunes, the software, you can even download free music, podcasts, Vidcast, and the TV shows I have told you. Apple has just released Apple TV that lets you see all the iTunes content directly on your TV. At the moment the unit around $ 300 (one time cost), but I guarantee you one or two years on the road when you are ready to fight it is run, the price is cheaper.

I also mentioned that my wife and I have> Wireless right into our house. It is definitely affordable, and you have no IT specialist to hook it all up! It comes with instructions and a CD-ROM set-up disc that you will go over everything. It does not take a clairvoyant to find out.

I bought a Wireless-G router from Linksys, but many brands are available. My father-in-law has been committed to ensure that ships for a nominal fee (I think it may even be free) with its DSL service from Verizon. He is in a 2 or 3 computer connector, plus a number of wireless laptop computers. He and my mother-in-law actually two of the flat-screen iMacs, not even join in something other than the socket. They are wirelessly connected to the Internet.

Bottom line ... Do not be afraid of technology. Take your time, explore your options and speak with someone who has done it. Everyone can enjoy the many benefits of broadband Internet service and a wireless network. Come onNow we are in the 21 Century, you know! Buck Rogers was zipping around in his jet pack right around now, right? Boy, how things change!

Technology is growing exponentially, and more affordable as the years pass. Mohr law at work. That's all for now folks. See you on the other side!

Protect yourself with knowledge

We are daily bombarded with facts, fiction, and some things in between. What is true, what is not? Well, that's the truth, there are people whose only goal is to make life miserable. Whether it is those who set up wireless networks, cracks or cloned networks to gain access to your computer, or those who have to create harmful content (spyware, viruses, etc. ..) to keep the information from your computer too easy to steal or destroy the software.

The best protection againstthese people it is up to date and know! Here are some tips you can use and protect your personal or professional data.

While wireless access is more convenient on a laptop probably will not occur without risk. It is much easier to gain access to a computer while it is connected to a wireless network. Ways to protect you with the highest encryption on your personal access (router). This is usually some form of WPA. You should alsochange any information on the standard wireless router and disable the SSID broadcast.

On your personal computer, there are some things you can do. Let's start with something simple sign such as the use of passwords and also a screen saver with a password. The password should not be stored near the computer and not a name or birth date. Make it a bit more challenge and change it every 90 days as a habit. Use letters, numbers and special charactersCharacters for passwords as well. This makes it much more difficult, someone trying to gain access to your computer and it is to crack even more demanding for the password-cracking software.

Now for the software, you need an Internet protection suite, antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall software contains. You can also validate the child protection software as a means of websites your children access to it should not view protected. These software packagesshould run continuously and allows to update frequently. They should also admit that automatically update your operating system. Many updates are sent out to update potential vulnerabilities and exploits.

Finally, you should get used to the encryption of private data such as bank statements or tax returns. This will prevent those who stole your computer or simply copied the files from accessing these files as your credentials required to decrypt the documents.

Setting up a wireless network

Some people see the task of setting up a wireless network within their home as a hard task, but it must be really not. In today's generation, we are surrounded by many wireless options. This is fine as long as we protect ourselves and make us, how it works.

First you must decide how you want your network setup and what you need in order to achieve this. In most cases, a house a desktop computer and who then becomes aor more other computers elsewhere within the house. These other computers may be other desktops or mobile laptops that does not really matter, except that you need to find the appropriate wireless adapter for those computers. Can use a desktop will need either a wireless PCI adapter or USB adapter in a laptop is a PCMCIA adapter card or USB adapter. Most new notebooks come with wireless already incorporated into the system, so you can make sure that before you buyan adapter. Then you must also get a wireless router. It is advantageous if you buy the router and the adapter from the same manufacturer, but it is not a necessity. As long as they both have the same technology that they should work together. 802.11g is the most commonly used signal. The wireless router acts as a base station that wirelessly transmits your internet signal. Your wireless adapter to connect your computer to the router withthis signal.

First, you should consult your broadband modem. This can be DSL, cable or FIOS. Also, your router should be unplugged. Now connect a network cable from the modem to the Internet, WAN, or WLAN port on the back of the router. Connect the modem and turn it on. Wait a few minutes to make sure that it is connected to the Internet. Then plug in and turn on the router. The LEDs on the front of the router should occur after about one minuteindicates that the modem is connected. Now turn off the computer when it is not already enabled. Most people will be the main computer directly into the router, plug and make the other wireless so that the removal of an unused wireless adapter.

So, now is a network cable connector from one of the LAN ports on the router directly to the LAN port on the motherboard of the computer. Windows XP will detect an internet connection and to enter a pop-up message with this indication.Next, you must open your Internet browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox) and enter the address that came with your router documentation. You can ask for the default password. The page displays the router's configuration. From here you can mentioned in the same wireless network name will enter the SSID. Make sure that this name is unique for your own protection. Also set the WPA or WEP, which was also a unique type of word.

This is a passwordProtection that you do not remember him. Then, finally, an administrator password. Make sure that you have forgotten this password, because you need it if you ever want to change something. Now that the router's setup, we take you to the adapter. Plug the adapter according to your computer or other computer and Windows will recognize it and show that device has a wireless connection. Note that a desktop be turned off when installing a PCI adapter. Atthis time, Windows may prompt you for a software that came with the adapter to install. Once this was done, right-click Wireless Network icon in the lower right corner of your Windows screen. He will say: View Available Wireless Networks. Locate your wireless network and click Connect to connect. Your wireless network should now be set up like that.

As you read this article, you can click on a computer that is the only appropriate disposal, say, your living room or bedroom. Do you want to run a computer or laptop anywhere in the house? Consider a wireless router.

A wireless router network device that allows you to connect through the use of wireless access points (WLAN), on different computers to the Internet without cables. In essence, the wireless router freedom allows for a rangeof Internet users.

There are clear advantages for the wireless router. The word "wireless" is what it is. Remember to be connected to a computer with a cable or phone line. One can sense that the machine is connected to a wall or furniture. This means that you spend much time on a seat (perhaps an uncomfortable one) to access websites or do not work.

With the advent of the wireless router, internet users can move easily throughout the houseor buildings and not connected to a phone jack or cable modem to stay. That is, if you work in the kitchen, you can move your laptop and find your favorite recipes. Or, if you like working outdoors, you will be able to go to the deck without worrying about outdoor cable. What Is Wireless Broadband Access, What Can I Do With It And How Do I Get It?

Wireless broadband access is a way to receive broadband on a computer without the need for wires. Instead a broadband wireless signal is sent around a local area using a device called a wireless broadband router which enables other computers within that area to connect to the broadband internet connection wirelessly.

What Can I Do With Wireless Broadband Access?

Well this cool innovation makes it possible for you to set up a wireless broadband connection in your home, which lets you use the internet on your laptop or a second desktop PC without the need to connect them to your main computer using wires. You would also be able to receive your wireless broadband connection in your garden and be able to move around from room to room within your house with your laptop whilst continuously connected to the net wirelessly. Once you get this handy facility you won't want to go back, its just so useful and convenient, especially to people that use their computers a lot at home.

The other great use for wireless broadband is where you can access the internet at public places such as cafes, restaurants, airports, train stations etc.. The way this works is that a business such as a cafe for example broadcasts a broadband signal in its immediate local area which you can log onto using your laptop (which needs to be equipped with a wireless network LAN card) This method of wirelessly connecting in public places is known as Wifi and the places that have these facilities are called Wifi Hotspots.

So How Do I Get Wireless Broadband Access?

To set up wireless broadband in your home, you will need to have a broadband connection already set up, you will need to buy a wireless broadband router which is the device which sends the wireless broadband signal around your home and you will need to buy a wireless network LAN card for your laptop or second PC which receives your broadband signal. Once you have the network set up, you will also have the added advantage that as your computers are networked together, you will be able to send and receive files from one computer to the other, read files off any of the computer hard drives from any computer in the network and print documents directly from any computer in the network. You will have to leave your main computer on for all of this to be possible though. However you don't need to leave your main computer on to use your broadband wirelessly around your home as the wireless broadband router will still send the broadband signal around your house even when your main computer is switched off.
If you only want to use your laptop in Wifi hotspots when you are out and about then you will only need to buy a wireless LAN card as a broadband router is not required in this case. The other thing you will need is an account with a wifi service provider to give you wifi access.

Wireless broadband routers and wireless LAN cards can be bought in most offline computer stores or you can buy them online too.
